5 tips for making the most of JMU

For seniors, it’s difficult to talk about graduation without reminiscing about time spent at JMU—what they wish they could relive or what they might’ve done differently. So, take some of their advice now and make the most of your years as a Duke.

1. The friends you make at JMU are friends for life, so don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to dorm mates. “Get a group of people from your dorm together and go to a theme party,” suggests senior Jeff Gliner. “However corny you might think it is to wear a costume, you will be the only one that isn’t dressed up.”

2. Take advantage of on-campus dining. Enjoy grilled cheese at D-hall or Cranberry Farms at Festival. “Use your Madison Grille punches,” says senior Laura Stone. “It’s fun going to a restaurant-style place when you’re used to dining halls all the time. Plus, when it’s your birthday, your meal is free.”

3. Take time to explore your surroundings in the Valley. Don’t get stuck in the JMU bubble. “Spend an afternoon walking around Court Square or exploring the shops in Downtown Harrisonburg,” says senior Beth Sokolick.

4. Show some Duke Dog pride and don’t hesitate to get involved in something that interests you. “Reach out, try new things, talk to people you normally wouldn’t and get involved via SOS [Student Organization Services, www.jmu.edu/ucenter/sos],” says senior Joelie Nebel.

5. Use on-campus resources to make your life easier and your college experience
more enjoyable. “Take advantage of the Reading and Writing Center or the Math and Science Learning Center,” says senior Kelly Rote. “If there is something you struggle in, don’t be afraid to seek help.”
