How to see the ‘Burg without a car

Your stretched calves burn from countless walks uphill and your hair smells of french fries whenever you leave D-hall. You’ve played foosball at Festival, sipped java at TDU and worked up a sweat at UREC.

The adjustment period is officially over. By now you’re bored with creeping through Devon Lane on weekends. Maybe you’ve even tackled a Jumbo Burger from Dave’s Express. Still, you want more.

It’s time to learn the ins and outs of Harrisonburg so you don’t feel like a lost child in a department store if you end up north of Grace Street. True, as freshmen you’re not allowed to have a car on campus, but by carefully planning your day and utilizing the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (HDPT), you can experience the city without ever looking for a parking space.

Your journey begins at the familiar Godwin Hall. Step out from under the dark hole that is the shelter and cross the parking lot to the city routes. Be on Route 3 when it departs at 8:52 a.m. The ride is short and the scenery familiar until you get off at the corner of Cantrell Avenue and South Main Street. As you stroll north a few blocks, entering downtown Harrisonburg, you reach the home of your first destination, The Artful Dodger.
