for Summer

Swimming in Blue Hole

When the heat of the summer becomes too difficult to bear, escape to the cool waters of Blue Hole in nearby Rawley Springs, Va. Located in the Dry River, the secluded watering hole is an oasis for students and locals alike looking for a quick getaway.
The walk down to the water is a little tricky, so be sure to wear reliable footwear. A gravel beach lines one side of the swimming area, and a ladder leads up to a 10-foot boulder that becomes a natural diving board.
The water is frigid, even in the hottest days of summer, so its season is limited to only a few months out of the year. It is not unusual to see playful dogs splashing through the water while their owners do back flips off the boulders or JMU students taking a dip in between stints of sunning on the rocks. “I live near the beach at home, and it’s really refreshing to go swimming here somewhere other than a pool,” says senior Becca Edwards. “Blue Hole is definitely worth the effort.” Before the warm summer months give way to brisk fall winds, make your way to Blue Hole to experience a cool hideaway.
Cost: Free
Directions: Drive down 33-West until you see cars parked on the side of the road, along with countless “No Turnaround” signs posted in every driveway. The parking situation is difficult, as on one side is a 55-mph highway and on the other, a steep cliff.
