Outlets for creative expression
Have you ever put your artwork on display in an actual gallery? Have you ever performed a poem live before a group of your peers? JMU offers many outlets for students interested in art, poetry and acting.
Acting it out
JMU’s theatre and dance program gives students the opportunity to act in plays, as well as help with set design, lighting, sound or costume design. Roger Hall, the theatre program coordinator, says any student is welcome to participate in JMU theatre productions.
This program puts on four main stage performances each year, one musical and 10 to 12 experimental shows. The Director’s Festival is held each fall with a series of one-act plays by beginner directors. Auditions for roles are in October and are open to all students.
The four main stage plays are performed in the Latimer-Shaeffer Theatre located in Duke Hall. The experimental plays are performed in Theatre II on South Main Street next to Kinko’s. Audition notices are posted throughout campus. For upcoming plays, call the box office at (540) 568-7000.
Display your artwork
The Zirkle House is a great place to showcase artwork and photography. The student-run gallery is located across from the Quad and is free to the public. New student shows are put up every two weeks. Students interested in displaying their artwork can email zirklehouse@mail.com or call (540) 568-6869.
