How to stay fit

<<back

Kresslein recommends following the American College of Sports and Medicine guidelines for exercise and resistance training. “After being in the business for awhile you start to see the effects of over-or-under training, and these guidelines have really been the best.” The guidelines can be found at www.acsm.org.

Kresslein suggests beginners work out for a shorter amount of time with less intensity and gradually increase to longer and more intense workouts.
UREC offers many fun workout choices.

“A lot of people see working out as going to the gym and getting on a treadmill or elliptical for 30 minutes,” says Kresslein. “However, in reality anything like playing basketball, racquetball, climbing the rock wall, anything that is physical and will get your heart rate up or challenge your muscles can be considered a good workout.”

Working out isn’t the only way to stay fit. Eating right is also an important aspect of being healthy. The Cornell study found that only 174 extra calories were to blame for the four pounds gained the first 12 weeks of college. Late night studying can lead to trips to the vending machine to grab a candy bar or a soda in search of a surge of energy.

But there are healthier ways to gain an energy boost. According to kidshealth.org, your body needs nutritious food to function well—certain foods affect your concentration, memory and energy. It’s important to eat a healthy diet balanced with protein, dairy, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables.
